Cosmic Contemporary Collaborations

Meet the Artists

Huang Xiang is considered one of the greatest poets of 20th Century China, a master calligrapher, painter,  and a preeminent, Post-Cultural Revolution poet of China. His lower class origins precluded him from attending school but at the age of 10 he discovered a treasure trove of college books that his father had hidden away earlier and began reading them in earnest. These books included the Classic Chinese works and translations of major western authors, poets and statesmen. In 1978 Huang posted big character posters of his poems on seventy yards of fence near Mao Zedong’s mausoleum near Tiananmen Square in Beijing. Word of Huang’s posters and his comments including, “The death of an emperor is the death of a rat”, spread across of the city in an instant. This act sparked a movement that became known worldwide as “The Democracy Wall”. Afterwards Huang Xiang and his friends held a short ceremony there to proclaim the founding of “The Enlightenment Society”, whose aim was far reaching reforms of Chinese society. The response from the public was electric! In the days that followed, the “Democracy Movement” was born.  In March 1979 Huang Xiang was arrested and sentenced to a period of “reform through labor”, and the Central committee banned publication of his works. The ban continues until this day. Huang Xiang was imprisoned six times spending a total of twelve years in Chinese prisons, due to his poetry, his advocacy for human rights, and his fight for democracy. Despite his harsh treatment, his several terms in prison, and his two stints on death row, his poetry reflects a hopeful view of China.

Huang Xiang and his wife Zhang Ling were forced to leave China and eventually they were granted asylum in the United States. In Oct 2004 Huang Xiang was asked to be a guest writer in Pittsburgh for the North American Network of Cities of Asylum. Shortly after coming to Pittsburgh Huang Xiang covered the outside of his house in the Mexican War District with his calligraphy and poetry. Today it is one of the most visited landmarks in Pittsburgh.

After completing his residency with the city of Asylum Huang Xiang moved to New York City where he frequently collaborates with other artists. Today his mission is to use his art to build a bridge between east and west and to honor a universal humanity.

Randall diGiuseppe is an American artist whose formal training began in illustration at the High School of Arts and Design in New York City. His transition to fine art soon followed at the Art Student’s League of NY. After obtaining his BA in Art History at Buffalo State College, he resumed his studio art training at the Stevenson Academy of Fine Arts. Randall studied at the Long Island Academy of Fine Arts in Riverhead, NY, then worked briefly as an animator and as an Autodesk Maya instructor in the 3D digital art industry. Randall earned his MFA in drawing from the New York Academy of Art in 2012. Randall has a lifelong passion for astronomy and stargazing, which has influenced his latest work – this collaboration with Huang Xiang – Nebulae: Symphonic Poems.

William Rock has studied, as well as taught, with Tibetan and Chinese monks and artists, writers and poets of the various spiritual and philosophical disciplines around the world. His art has been exhibited within the USA as well as internationally, where he has spoken and taught extensively on the nature of creativity, mysticism and art. His interest in sculpture is the human form. He has spent years contemplating classical sculpture worldwide. “Casting my sculpture in bronze is where it finally embraced a genuine sense of the eternal. The way light engages a bronze figurative piece of pure transcendence and bronze sculpture can last thousands of years”.  Sculpture is a gift to us to celebrate our shared humanity and it also communicates an enduring sense of our origins and diverse cultural history. William has also collaborated with his friend Huang Xiang in an international exposition entitled, “Century Mountain Project”, which celebrates the greatness in us as human beings exemplified throughout the centuries by outstanding creators, thinkers, discovers and leaders – people who stood out like mountains throughout the centuries. William Rock is the founder of Art and Inspiration International, a nonprofit organization that promotes the arts, creativity, education, charity, dialogue and cross cultural collaboration.

Dennis Keyes is a digital artist and photographer. He uses digital tools to reshape the reality represented in photograph, into a fantasy carrying, at times, an altogether different message, perhaps to more idyllic time and place, devoid of human “ progress”. In addition to print an electronic media, he has produced many custom renderings of portraits, landscapes and architecture as watercolors and acrylics on canvas and on aluminum and silk. Some of his recent architectural work has been featured in the DuPont Registry – Gallery of Fine Homes.  His works are displayed in galleries and private homes and corporate boardrooms in Europe. He is the photographer representing the state of Pennsylvania at the new Andrews Air Force Base Hospital. And his work is displayed at the emergency suite at the Armstrong Country Memorial Hospital. His work is on permanent display at the International Dark Sky Park at the Headlands in Michigan. Since retiring from the practice of dentistry he has also produced a number of travel videos celebrating many of the places he has visited. The work presented for this exhibition, OMG, is a contemplation on our evolving understanding of the nature of the universe, our interpretations of our place in the universe, and the trajectory of the rise of mankind.

Mimi Jong  who reflects many cultures, studied Architecture and Urban Planning at Stuttgart University in Germany and traveled extensively absorbing new cultural experiences. Mimi explores diverse cultural expression through architecture, music, painting, poetry, calligraphy, feng shui, and most importantly, through people and friendships. As an architect, her first assignment in Pittsburgh was the placement design of the Mayor Richard Caliguiri statue at the City county Building. She was also responsible for the design of Pittsburgh Municipal court and the Masonic Temple. In 1997 Mimi founded MLJ Architects specializing in small projects and residential designs and additions. Her involvement in music connects her with artists of a wide variety of genres, including jazz, folk, classical, and global. Her primary passion is weaving cross-cultural experience to nurture understanding between people. In addition to her own national and international performances, Mimi performs in collaboration with a Bluegrass duo, Appalasia”, and she also produces concerts inviting international musicians to meet, to share, and to collaborate, as well as to facilitate educational programs through master classes and workshops. Mimi plays a beautiful Chinese stringed instrument, the erhu, and will be entertaining visitor throughout the evening.
