《AN EULOGY ON MY HUMBLE ABODE》
Known will the hills be if fairies dwell, no matter high or low; and charmed will the waters be if dragons hidden, no matter deep or shallow. A humble abode though this is, my virtues make it smell sweet. Verdant are the stonesteps overgrown with moss, and green seems the screen as the grass seen through it. I chat and laugh only with great scholars and have no intercourse with the ignorant. I can play lute and read my sutras; no unpleasant music to grate on my ears and no red-tape to make me weary and tired. Zhuge's residence in Nanyang and Ziyun's inhabitance in Xishu are both like what Confucius quoth, "How canth it be humble?"

"canth" is the old form of "can" for the third person.
"intercourse" used in classics can mean "talk". The meaning you mentioned is used in modern times.
angelia, you said that "I want to know how you are translate word"陋室铭“,because I am interesting in it ."
you should change the word "interesting" into "interested
I think this is very good translation version. I want to know how you are translate word"陋室铭“,because I am interesting in it .By the way ,my English is not so good ,so I want to learn more and more , Hope the author won't mind. Can I seek advice or information of you? Thank you very much!

Hi, dodo, because it reads with a classical taste.
" if dragons reside/ if dragons ARE hidden"
"Humble as it is, this abode smells of fragrance of virtures."
"green seems the screen as the grass seen through it."此句似不通。

Thank you for the suggestions. I use the word "intercourse" in its first and basic meaning, which was often used in quite a few translations of Chinese classical essays. from that point of view, it has a literary appeal. That's why I chose it.

I chanced upon this website. It's cool.
And this is a very good translation indeed, yet still two suggestions to make:
1. Could you please offer the Chinese version as well? It might help the readers to appreciate this translation better with a source text readily available.
2. The word "intercourse", as I understand it, in most cases has the implication of sexuality. There is a pool of other words to choose from to avoid disputes.
Just outsider opionions. Hope the author won't mind.
